As an employer you are required to help apprentices achieve a certain level of qualification. Here is a quick guide to which types of apprenticeship offer which qualification, and what you should require from your apprentices in order to accept them onto the programme:
Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2 qualification (equivalent to five good GCSE passes)
These should provide apprentices with the skills and qualifications for their chosen career and allow entry (if desired) to an Advanced Apprenticeship. To be accepted apprentices, need to be enthusiastic, keen to learn and have a reasonable standard of education.
Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3 qualification (equivalent to two A-level passes)
To start this programme, apprentices should have five GCSEs (grade A*-C) or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship. This will provide them with the skills and qualifications they need for their chosen career and allow entry (if desired) to a Higher Apprenticeship or degree level qualification.
Higher Apprenticeship - Level 4/5 qualification (equivalent to a Foundation Degree)
To start this programme, apprentices should have a Level 3 qualification (A-Levels, Advanced Diploma or International Baccalaureate) or have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship.
